Under the Flagship

Just a few feet of heavy concrete separates this hideaway from the joggers, bicyclists, and tourists, who move up and down the seawall. It could just as well be miles. The Flagship Hotel driveway, and the concrete base that supports that driveway, provides protection from the elements and the seclusion that those, who are drawn there, seek.

Enjoying the solitude and warmth of an early sunrise, this fellow was busy carving on something; I couldn’t tell what. The ever-present grocery cart, serving as a wheeled mule for his only possessions, stands near. I chose not to disturb him and leave him to his peaceful act of creativity. I fantasized that he was, perhaps, carving a toy for a small child. .
