The
Whistle
I
was deep in the canyons of downtown. The temperature was well over a
hundred degrees in the shade. I was very uncomfortable, but not because of
the heat. After
some failed attempts at conversation, I realized that this person existed
in a world I could not enter, nor comprehend. This person was neither
begging for money, nor waiting for a bus
just waiting. The old,
overstuffed plaid suitcase, and the anxious and frightened look on this
persons face suggested a potential arrival; an arrival of someone or
something that would either bring much happiness, or much fear. I
studied the photos and sketches and discovered the chrome whistle. One can
only imagine the reason for it. After closer study, I realized that this person was a woman.
