Sleep

An urban camper once asked me if I knew why you see so many homeless people sleeping during the day. I had always figured that they were lazy, bored, drunk, or on drugs. He told me that it was because they didn’t sleep at night. The daylight offered them some warmth and security, but the night was cold and dangerous. He said that at night there was always the possibility of being robbed, beaten or raped…sometimes just for a pack of cigarettes or a candy bar.

In this old city park, across from the railroad depot, the concrete and wood bench was being fully utilized. This tall, lanky figure was a classic example of total exhaustion.

The long shadows indicate the approach of darkness.
