Signs of the Future

I spotted this young family, walking, with what appeared to be groceries. I wondered where they were going. I knew there were no houses or apartments nearby. Then I remembered an area, under a nearby bridge, where the overhead roadway offered shelter from the sun and heat of the day and the heavy dew and chill of night. The heavy trucks and busses roared by – just inches above the heads of sleeping children. Anywhere from 30 to 40 people lived there at any given time.

As I watched them make their way past the strip joints and liquor stores, it occurred to me that the child probably thought everyone lived like this. Then I started noticing the signs, both real and imagined.
