Santa Claus Cart

I saw Richard resting in the shade, on the steps of a downtown church. His cart was standing tall and ready by his side. The cart was piled almost as high as Richard was tall, with numerous plastic bags clinging precariously to the sides. I asked him what he did with all the stuff. He said that he sold some for cokes and candy, but that mostly, he just gave it away to other folks who needed it more that himself. The cart looked as though it would tip over with the least breeze.

Richard was as well rounded as the cart, had a flowing white beard, and was a little unstable because of a clubfoot. He said he wasn’t pretty, but that he was smart and got all the food he needed. He patted his huge tummy and laughed a big Santa Claus laugh.

I thought how ironic that the grocery cart is a symbol of America’s prosperity, but has become a recognizable symbol of our country’s poverty and homelessness.
