Bugler Tobacco

Glenn was carrying two enormous black plastic trash bags and was making the rounds of the local dumpsters behind the liquor stores and barbeque joints. His prized possession was his old worn out Valvolene gimme cap, drawn up to its last notch. He fancied himself as a good auto mechanic, but said that after a week or two on a job, he would get bored and just walk away.

His outlook on the status of the economy of America was the shrinking of the pouch of Bugler Tobacco. “You can only roll 25 cigarettes nowadays instead of the usual 30,” he said. I nodded in agreement. I said, “I know what you mean”, but I really didn’t.

He told me he shared a vacant house with another fellow. The location was three or four miles from where we were…a long walk. Glenn wasn’t much older than myself, but his watery eyes, wrinkled face and gaunt stature showed a lot of hard miles. He was sober, alert and just going about his own business.
